Stormy Daniels Sues Trump Lawyer as White House Denies Affair

  • Daniels accuses Michael Cohen of defamation, suggesting she lied
  • Trump strongly denies underlying allegations, spokesman says
  • Stormy Daniels added Donald Trump’s personal lawyer as a defendant in her litigation against the president, another crease in the legal morass arising as a result of her alleged liaison with Trump in 2006 and a subsequent agreement not to discuss the relationship.

Daniels, an adult actress whose real epithet is Stephanie Clifford, claimed on Monday that she was defamed by a statement Trump’s lawyer issued last-place month that built her definitely sounds like a liar.

In a Feb. 13 statement, Michael Cohen told,” Just because something isn’t true doesn’t mean that it can’t cause you harm or shatter” in matters relating to the $130,000 he paid Clifford in 2016 to keep quiet about the alleged relationship with Trump. According to Clifford, the statement harmed her reputation and exposed her to contempt, derision and shame.

The filing in California federal court followed a” 60 Minutes” interview aired Sunday night in which Clifford described the encounter she had with Trump more than 10 years ago. Raj Shah, a spokesman for the White House, supposed Monday that Trump strongly, clearly and consistently denied the underlying claims.

” The chairman doesn’t believe any of the claims Ms. Daniels established in the interview last nighttime are true ,” Shah supposed. The statements represent the White House’s most substantial statement on the alleged affair.

The television interview was the first time Clifford explicitly showed the liaison since receiving a $130,000 payment from Cohen shortly before the 2016 election in exchange for a nondisclosure agreement. The Wall Street Journal firstly reported the payment.

The interview described the highest ratings in 10 years for CBS’s” 60 Minutes ,” attracting 21.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings released by the network.

    ‘False Charges’

Asked about the payment by Cohen, Shah mentioned:” False costs are resolved out of courtroom all the time. This is nothing out of the ordinary .”

Clifford has sought to invalidate the agreement, in part because she articulates Trump didn’t sign it, and said her decision to speak out was driven by suggestions by the president’s associates that she made up the story.

Clifford’s sometimes-graphic retelling of the alleged sex incident largely echoed a 2011 interview with In Touch magazine about such relationships. In Touch didn’t publish the interview after Cohen threatened to sue the publication,” 60 Minute ” reported.

She also said she had been intimidated to keep silent. Clifford said that in 2011, after Cohen’s threat to sue In Touch, an unidentified humankind approached her in a parking lots before a gym class in Las Vegas and said it would be a reproach for her daughter if something happened to Clifford.

Trump’s representatives denied allegations of an affair during the presidential campaign, and earlier this year Daniels signed a statement denying any relation, which was released after Cohen. The White House has significantly avoided commenting on the allegations, but previously broadly condemned violent menaces when asked about the alleged intimidation.

    Make Her Life’ Hell’

In the” 60 Minutes” interview, Clifford said she signed the denial because she belief Cohen would attain her” life hell in many different ways .”

Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for first lady Melania Trump, appears to be allude to the allegations in a tweet Sunday night.

” While I know the media is enjoying speculation and salacious chitchat, I’d like to remind people there’s a minor child who’s call should be kept out of report narratives when at all possible ,” she wrote.

The alleged liaison between the future chairwoman and Clifford occurred only months after the birth of Barron Trump, his youngest son.

    ‘So Much Fake News’

The president himself tweeted Monday morning that there was ” so much fake news ,” but it was unclear if he was referring to the” 60 Minutes” story.

” Never been more voluminous or more inaccurate ,” Trump wrote.

Clifford’s lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said Monday morning that there was additional testify to reinforcement Clifford’s claims. Clifford herself declined to answer questions about whether she had any text contents or videos documenting the relationship.

” We’re not going to get into the details of everything we have at this time, and there’s a reason for that ,” Avenatti told NBC News.” We understand the American people want all the information right now, instantly. It would stimulate no sense for us to play our hands as to this issue and we’re not going to do it right now .”

In a separate interview with Anderson Cooper that aired last week on CNN, Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, said she had a 10 -month affair with Trump that likewise began in 2006. McDougal said she was in love with Trump but violated off the relationship out of guilt over his marriage.

The case is Clifford v. Trump, 2:18 -cv-0 2217, U.S. District Court, Central District of California( Los Angeles ).
